Directions for Challenge #1

 

ROUTE PLAN: Dahlonega → Camp Wahsega Road → FS 28-1 → Woody Gap → Neels Gap

START: Dahlonega Gold Museum (Downtown Dahlonega)

Address: 1 Public Square, Dahlonega
Begin on the historic downtown square.

STOP 1: Camp Wahsega Road

  1. From the Gold Museum, head north on GA-52/GA-9 (Morrison Moore Pkwy). 
  2. Turn right onto Camp Wahsega Road. 
  3. Continue for approx. 6.5 miles through the scenic Chattahoochee National Forest. 
  4. Pass Camp Wahsega 4-H Center on the right. 

Camp Wahsega Road is fully paved but remote, winding and scenic.

STOP 2: Forest Service Road 28-1 (Wahsega → Cooper Gap area)

FS 28-1 is one of the most well-known connectors in the Blue Ridge district.

  1. Continue past Camp Wahsega until you reach the junction with FS Road 28-1.
    – It will be clearly marked with a Forest Service sign. 
  2. Turn right onto FS 28-1. 
  3. Follow FS 28-1 for approximately 5 miles toward the ridge. 
  4. You will climb gradually toward Cooper Gap, passing creek crossings, rhododendron tunnels, and mountain views. 

Note:
FS 28-1 connects Camp Wahsega Road → Cooper Gap → USFS road network along the Appalachian Trail ridges.

STOP 3: Woody Gap (Appalachian Trail Vista)

Address: GA-60, Suches
From the end of FS 28-1:

  1. Continue until FS 28-1 intersects Cooper Gap. 
  2. From Cooper Gap, take the exit toward Suches and follow signs to GA-60. 
  3. Turn left onto GA-60 and head south for approx. 3.5 miles to Woody Gap. 

Woody Gap offers parking, vault toilets and sweeping views of the Georgia mountains.

STOP 4: Neels Gap / Mountain Crossings

Address: 12471 Gainesville Hwy, Blairsville
12. From Woody Gap, continue north on GA-60 briefly until it connects back into the scenic loop toward Blood Mountain.
13. Transition onto US-19/129 (via Suches or via Turner's Corner depending on FS 28-1 exit point).
14. Continue north on US-19/129 toward Blood Mountain for approx. 10 miles.
15. Arrive at Neels Gap, home of the iconic Mountain Crossings outfitter and the stone building the AT literally passes through.

This is one of the most famous Appalachian Trail road crossings in the Southeast.


Directions for Challenge #5

 

ROUTE PLAN: Acworth → Unknown Hero Grave → Allatoona Pass → Cooper’s Furnace → Etowah Mounds → Red Top Mountain

START: Downtown Acworth (Main Street / Depot Park area)

Begin on Main Street in the center of Downtown Acworth.

STOP 1: Grave of the Unknown Hero

Location: Old Allatoona Road SE (just before Allatoona Pass parking)

  1. From Downtown Acworth, head north on Main Street. 
  2. Turn left onto S Cobb Parkway (US-41 N). 
  3. Continue approx. 3.3 miles. 
  4. Turn right onto GA-92/Lake Acworth Drive. 
  5. Drive 0.5 miles, then turn left onto Old Allatoona Road SE. 
  6. Follow approx. 1.5 miles; the Grave of the Unknown Hero is on the right-hand side before the trailhead. 

STOP 2: Allatoona Pass Battlefield Trailhead

Location: 640 Old Allatoona Rd SE
7. Continue north on Old Allatoona Road a short distance (less than 0.2 mi).
8. Turn into the Allatoona Pass Trailhead parking area on the left.

STOP 3: Cooper’s Furnace Day Use Area

Location: 1052 Old River Rd SE
9. Exit the trailhead and continue north, then curve around as Old Allatoona Road becomes Allatoona Dam Road SE.
10. Follow signs toward Allatoona Dam.
11. Turn right onto Old River Road SE.
12. Continue approximately 1 mile to enter Cooper’s Furnace Day Use Area.

STOP 4: Etowah Indian Mounds Historic Site

Address: 813 Indian Mounds Rd, Cartersville
13. Return to Old River Road SE heading back toward Allatoona Dam Road SE.
14. Turn right onto Allatoona Dam Road SE, following it back toward US-41.
15. Turn left onto US-41 N / Joe Frank Harris Parkway.
16. Continue approx. 3.8 miles.
17. Turn left onto Grassdale Road / Riverside Drive.
18. After 0.8 miles, turn right onto Indian Mounds Road.
19. Continue to the main entrance of Etowah Indian Mounds.

STOP 5: Red Top Mountain State Park

Address: 50 Lodge Rd SE, Acworth
20. Leave Etowah Mounds back the same way to US-41 S.
21. Turn right onto US-41 S, heading toward Cartersville/Acworth.
22. Drive approx. 5.3 miles.
23. Turn left onto Red Top Mountain Road SE (the large intersection with signage for the state park).
24. Continue 1.8 miles to reach the Red Top Mountain State Park Visitor Center or any chosen scenic pull-off along the main loop.


Directions for Challenge #6

 

ROUTE PLAN: Jasper → Talking Rock → Old Whitestone → FS 28-1 → Sharp Mountain → Downtown Jasper

START: JAX Coffee / Jasper Outpost 515 (E Church St & 515)

Address: 140 N Main St, Jasper (approx. area depending on listing)
From the parking area:

  1. Turn right onto N Main Street. 
  2. Continue south into Downtown Jasper. 

STOP 1: Pickens County Courthouse / Marble Museum (Downtown Jasper)

Address: 141 N Main St, Jasper
3. Continue straight on N Main Street, the courthouse is on the left.

STOP 2: Woodbridge Inn (N Main Street)

Address: 44 Chambers St, Jasper
4. From the courthouse, continue north on N Main Street for one block.
5. Turn right onto Goble Street.
6. Turn left onto N Ward Street, then right onto Chambers Street.
7. Woodbridge Inn will be on your right.

STOP 3: Downtown Talking Rock

Address: 4504 Highway 136 W (general center of town)
8. Return to N Main Street.
9. Turn right (north) to continue out of downtown.
10. Stay straight as N Main becomes Talking Rock Road.
11. Continue for approximately 5.5 miles into Downtown Talking Rock.
12. Parking for the shops and general store is on the right.

STOP 4: Old Whitestone Road Loop (Gravel)

Entry: Old Whitestone Rd E
13. Continue north on Highway 136 out of Talking Rock.
14. Drive approx. 3 miles and turn right onto Old Whitestone Road East.
15. Continue straight to enter the gravel loop.
16. Complete your loop and reconnect either where you entered or at Old Whitestone Road West (your choice).

STOP 5: Forest Service Road 28-1

Entry: Off GA-136 toward Burnt Mountain / Talona Creek
17. Return to Highway 136 heading east toward Burnt Mountain.
18. After approx. 2.2 miles, look for the marked Forest Service Road 28-1 entrance on the right.
19. Follow FS 28-1 as desired (creek areas, clearings and mountain woods).
20. Continue until FS 28-1 reconnects with GA-136, or turn around depending on road conditions.

STOP 6: Talking Rock Nature Park

Address: 4633 Highway 136 W, Talking Rock
21. Return to Highway 136 and head west back toward Talking Rock.
22. After approx. 2 miles, Talking Rock Nature Park entrance will be on the left.

STOP 7: Sharp Mountain Vineyards

Address: 110 Rathgeb Trail, Jasper
23. Continue west on Highway 136 back toward Jasper.
24. At the light, turn left onto GA-515 S.
25. After approx. 3 miles, turn right onto Philadelphia Road.
26. Continue 0.7 miles and turn left onto Rathgeb Trail.
27. Follow to Sharp Mountain Vineyards.

(Note: Open Fridays–Sundays.)

FINISH: Downtown Jasper

  1. Return to Philadelphia Road. 
  2. Turn right onto GA-515 N. 
  3. Continue 2.5 miles and take the exit for Downtown Jasper / N Main Street. 
  4. Turn right onto N Main Street, returning to downtown.
