North Georgia Jeep Adventure Challenges

🌄 CHALLENGE 8: “Rainbow Roads & Cherokee Roots” Adventure
Area: Hayesville, NC → Rainbow Springs Rd → Fires Creek → Lake Chatuge → Bell Mountain
Time: 5–7 hours (full day if you linger)
Difficulty: Easy to moderate (forest roads + scenic pavement)

📍 Start: Downtown Hayesville

🥞 Breakfast Stop (Required)

Fuel up with a full breakfast and coffee before hitting the forest roads.

📍 Downtown Hayesville – History Loop

🪶 Task 1 — Cherokee Roots Stop

Cherokee Homestead Exhibit
Take a photo of your Jeep near the outdoor exhibit featuring the replica Cherokee winter house or schoolhouse.
📸 Bonus: Read one exhibit sign.

🏚️ Task 2 — Old Jail Time Capsule

Old Jail Museum
Snap a photo of your Jeep with the historic 1912 jail building.
Inside you’ll find Cherokee exhibits, old jail cells, a 1940s doctor’s office, and a Clay County African American history exhibit.

🏛️ Task 3 — Courthouse Legacy Moment

Historic Clay County Courthouse
Take a respectful photo outside the restored courthouse (now the Beal Center).
🛻 Off-Road Segment: Rainbow Springs Road

🌲 Task 4 — Forest Road Discovery

Rainbow Springs Road
Drive the entire length of Rainbow Springs Road. Stop for a photo in front of the big rock wall.

🧹 Steward Moment: Pick up 3 small pieces of litter around along the road.

🌊 Scenic Nature Stop

💧 Task 5 — Creek & Falls Pause

Fires Creek Recreation Area
Walk the short trail to Leatherwood Falls.
📸 Take a Jeep + creek photo at the parking area or picnic pull-off.

🌅 Lake Views & Dam Walk

🌊 Task 6 — Dam Walk Challenge

Chatuge Dam and Recreation Area
Park and walk part of the dam.
📸 Capture a wide shot of Lake Chatuge with mountains in the background.

🍽️ Lunch Stop (Required)

Fat Dog on Main
Great variety—from buffalo cauliflower to flatbreads and specialty sandwiches.
Perfect mid-day regroup spot.

🏔️ Iconic View Finish

🦅 Task 7 — Summit View Photo

Bell Mountain
Drive to the summit and take a panoramic Jeep photo overlooking Lake Chatuge and the Hiawassee Valley.
📸 Bonus: Capture a shot with your hood and the lake both in frame.

🍷 Optional Wind-Down Stops (Choose One)

Eagle Fork Vineyards — Scenic wine tasting and vineyard views
Hayesville Brewing — Craft brews, great food, dog-friendly

🏁 Finish

Snap a final group photo back in downtown Hayesville or at Bell Mountain and post it with your challenge name.

Directions for the Challenge

ROUTE PLAN

Downtown Hayesville → Rainbow Springs Rd → Fires Creek → Lake Chatuge Dam → Bell Mountain → Downtown Hayesville

START: Downtown Hayesville

Begin near the courthouse square and Cherokee Homestead Exhibit.

STOP 1: Rainbow Springs Road

From downtown Hayesville, head to toward Rainbow Springs Road.
Road becomes gravel and forested.
STOP 2: Fires Creek Recreation Area

From Hayesville, go west on US-64.
Turn RIGHT on Fires Creek Road and drive 3.9 miles.
Turn LEFT on Fires Creek Wildlife Road and continue 1.9 miles to parking areas.

STOP 3: Chatuge Dam

Return toward Hayesville and follow signs for Lake Chatuge / Chatuge Dam.
Park and walk part of the dam for views.

STOP 4: Bell Mountain

From Hayesville, drive south toward Hiawassee, GA.
Follow signs for Bell Mountain and drive to the summit parking area.
